Trent has done well the last couple of days.
On Sunday afternoon he got his central line removed, which of course he was not happy about. He is going to grow to be terrified of any type of tape. We are excited to be free of IVs!! Dad was able to go home Sunday night and spend some much needed time with Big Brother and get refreshed with a good nights sleep. This also allowed Braxton some time at home so that he could play with his neighborhood friends.
Child Life brought us a coup car for Trent to ride around the unit. He has enjoyed riding in the coup around the floor as well as driving up to the 12th floor rooftop play area, which he calls going "outside, outside". I suppose going outside the room is just "outside". He has also made a couple of trips to the playroom, where he has bowled and cooked dad some hot dogs on the grill. The doctors and nurses love to see him up and moving around. Of course we do too!!
Yesterday we noticed what looked like some blisters underneath the tape of one of his chest tube sites. Kari, his NP, came in and determined that there were in fact blisters forming under the tape. Therefore, the site had to be re-dressed (more tape drama). Again last night we noticed more blisters at the other chest tube site...again, more re-dressing (yet again...more tape drama). They are not sure if he is developing an allergy to the tape or if there was some other cause of the burn-like blisters. We are just keeping it dressed with tape and watching to be sure no other blisters begin to form. There were no changes in plans for Trent yesterday during rounds other than just allowing his chest tubes to continue to drain. Mom and Dad were able to go out to dinner Monday evening...a BIG THANKS to Aunt Amy, Uncle Eric, and Eva of course!!!
Today, they took his chest tubes off suction. There are a couple of different things that can result from doing this. 1 - The chest could continue to drain without the suction. 2 - His lungs could have a build up of fluid, which would show up on his chest x-ray tomorrow. Then we would know that he still needs to drain off more fluid and they would put him back on suction. 3 - His fluid drainage could be minimal, and the x-ray will show that his lungs are clear enough to remove the chest tubes. After just 6 days post-op it would be surprising to see option 3. However, we'd love to see that happen!!
Trent's doctors and nurses continue to be in awe of how well he is doing. Kari calls him a superstar. I call him our itty bitty hero. I'm sure we are partial, but we truly think he is amazing.
Once again, we would like to thank you all for everything you have done...most importantly the prayers!! Trent has had some sweet visitors who brought lots of goodies and offered some very much appreciated support in the last couple of days. We feel very unworthy of all the awesome support that has been extended our way. Without your prayers and support this journey would not be nearly as smooth. We also want you all to know that we are very appreciative for the help with Braxton. It is awesome to be able to rest easy knowing he is being cared for just as well or better than we could do ourselves. We are truly humbled.
Heart hugs,
Wayne, Holly, Braxton and Trent
