As you all know, Trent went in yesterday for a heart catheterization.
We arrived at Levine at 5:30am...bright eyed and bushy tailed!! That is Trent's normal morning state. He is a morning person, like his daddy. We had several talks with him ahead of time, and he knew....well, as much as a three year old can know, about what was going to happen. And he was okay with it. After the nurses checked us in, we talked to the anesthesiologist and the cath team to go over once more what was going to happen, what they were looking for, and how long we could expect them to keep our little guy. Then, the nurse came in and gave him some medicine that would make him a little out of it so that he wouldn't mind going back with them for the procedure. One of us was able to follow him into the cath lab and stay with him until he was put to sleep. That was comforting to know that he did not go away and cry for us. They told us that he would be in there for two to three hours. Well, after an hour and fifteen minutes, we received a call from Dr. Paolillo that he was done. He did not see any collateral veins and there was no narrowing of the aorta(which are two things that they look for in the cath that can be common and sometimes keep them there longer). So we were relieved that they did not find any surprises and everything looked really good.
We were also able to be with Trent when he woke up. And boy, he was NOT happy when he did. I cannot say that I blame him. Since they went in through major arteries, they wanted him to remain still for five hours. Have you ever told a three year to "be still"?? Well, if they did, I would need to see video evidence to convince me. Trent is still when he is asleep...other than that, he is on the go! Needless to say, we had to get creative to keep him laying in the bed. We ate, watched movies, played the iPad, ate some more, read books, listened to music and anything we could think of to keep him occupied. Dr. Peeler and Kristin (from the surgical team) came in and talked to us about The Fontan. Dr. Peeler said of Trent's cath results, that they were as good as it gets for someone with Trent's condition...some of the best he's ever seen. That was awesome news!! They discussed what they would do during this upcoming surgery, how long it would take, all the risks and complications, how long of a hospital stay to expect, when we want it to happen, etc. They told us that they would look at their schedules and call us in a few days to talk about a date.
We were able to head home around 3:00pm. Trent took a good nap and some medicine for pain and was feeling better last night. Today, other than a few battle scars, he was back to normal. He is an amazing little guy. He bounces back so quickly. When we asked him tonight if he was going to be okay to go back in the hospital for his surgery, even with yesterday fresh on his mind, he says "yeah, okay". He is a super brave boy.
We cannot thank you all enough for all the calls, texts, visits, good food, balloons, pics, and most importantly, prayers. We know Trent is in God's hands, and he is working a miracle in our little guy everyday. Your faithful prayers have played a huge part in this. For it we are forever grateful.
Heart hugs,
Wayne, Holly, Braxton and Trent
