Post Fontan Life

Trent had a pretty tough day on Thursday. Each day he has had some ups and downs, understandable. But Thursday was mostly downs. He had a good bit of pain and laid around just about all day. He continued to have a good deal of drainage. So they kept the tubes in for the day.

On Friday, He had a pretty big day. The doctors rounded and we found out that both chest tubes were coming out. That was probably the best news we had heard in many days!! That day, besides the removal of the tubes, he also received an EKG, labs drawn, and an echocardiogram. All of which looked really good. The fenestration could not be seen on the echo. We hope that it has closed on it own so that he hopefully will not have to have it closed in a procedure in the future. Trent also felt much better on Thursday. He was up and around a good bit that day. His NP, Mary Emily, told us that everything would need to look "pristine" on all of his tests as well as his chest x-ray Saturday morning in order to consider going home Saturday.

Saturday morning, Trent wasn't feeling that great again. Mostly just wanted to lay around. Curits from cardiology came in that morning and said that Trent's chest x-ray was the best one he'd seen all day. He thought things looked good for going home, but that we'd need to wait until they did rounds and see what everyone thought once they saw all the tests and had a chance to look at Trent. Trent also vomited with breakfast, after taking his meds. So, we were concerned a little with that. We still urged Trent to get up and get moving. After a sponge bath and getting cleaned up, we were finally able to talk him  into taking a walk. He took a little trip down to Seacrest Studio on the first floor of Levine, where he got to meet country singer Kip Moore. Guess what Trent asked him..."What kind of truck do you drive?" He is definitely a little country boy. He also wanted to know where Mr. Moore's keys were...supposing he was thinking of driving it. Everyone present got a good laugh.

As we returned to the 8th floor, we spotted the team in the hall making rounds. Curtis asked how we felt about getting to go home. They wanted to wait until after Trent's next round of meds to be sure everything stayed down before saying for sure. And they had a few slight issues with our going home meds that had to be worked out. After lunch with Maw-Maw and Ju-Ju, meds, and a good nap we got word that we were cleared to for sure go HOME!!! They had to do some re-dressing to his chest tube sites and pull a suture, then we were off!! We arrived home late yesterday afternoon and spent the evening with family. It felt so good to have our family home again. I think Braxton was glad to have Trent home also. He has been so sweet to him since he arrived home.

Trent has lost nearly four pounds since the day of his surgery. The doctors tell us that it's normal for him to loose a good bit due to all the diuretics he's been on to try and get rid of all the extra fluid around his lungs. I am sure the hospital food probably had a little to do with it also. Now that he is back home to Mama's cooking and all his favorites, he'll put some weight back on soon.

We will find out about follow up appointments with the surgeons and cardiologist in the next day or two.

I know we say it all the time, but we really mean it...we are very thankful for all your support and prayers. We are believers in the power of faithful prayers. Trent is living proof. God must have a big plan for that little guy. We are so thankful HE chose us to be Trent's parents.

Heart hugs,
Wayne, Holly, Braxton and Trent
